'Penguin and Egg' Shows Future of Milky Way
The James Webb Space Telescope has sent back more images of the vastness of the universe, two years after it began its mission.
NASA released images of two intertwined galaxies glowing in infrared light on Friday. The galaxies, called the Penguin and the Egg, are located 326 million light-years away and are surrounded by a blue nebula of stars and gas.
According to NASA The two galaxies have been intertwined for millions of years, but will eventually merge into one. The same is expected to happen to our Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy in four billion years.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the successor to the old Hubble Telescope and is the largest and most powerful space telescope ever built. It was launched into space at the end of 2021 and moved to its location about 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. Exactly two years ago, in July 2022, the first official images were published.
“In just two years, Webb has changed our view of the universe,” NASA’s Mark Clampin said in a statement.
