TOKYO (AP) – German wheelchair basketball players have lost a coup against the United States at the Paralympics in Tokyo.
National coach Nikolai Zeltinger’s team took a 40:30 lead in the third quarter against the Paralympic winner in Rio and eventually lost with 55:58. The women, who won silver in Rio, had also won gold in London before, with a 77:58 win over Australia.
“It’s a shame and a disgrace that we do not get the thing. But we are satisfied with the performance. That is why we get the courage out of it,” Zeldinger said. “We have a different demand than the Americans. They definitely want to get gold. We need to beat one of the top four in the world to advance to the quarterfinals. Such performance against the English on Friday should be sufficient.
