Xiaomi has bridged the gap between premium smartphones and digital cameras with its current flagship Xiaomi 12S Ultra More closure. While the Sony IMX989’s 1-inch sensor is in no way inferior to a true digital camera, the accompanying wide-angle lens has a fixed focal length that cannot be changed, as is typical of smartphones. Now the company is offering a rare look behind the scenes. In fact, two projects were developed at the same time, one of which became 12S Ultra. The other is a hybrid between a smartphone and a mirrorless camera.

This concept device has another 1″ sensor without a fixed lens but with a protective sapphire crystal housing. Interchangeable Leica M-mount lenses are also used, which open the door for professional (semi) use. Xiaomi combines a wide range of lenses with an advanced camera app that supports peak focus, zebra patterns, histograms, and other tools. Of course, 10-bit RAW support is also available.

The main camera is the same as the 12S Ultra – another 1″ IMX989 sensor and a 23mm lens. The 13mm wide-angle camera is identical, too. Both can be used without additional devices. There have been lens accessories for smartphones before, but earlier concepts required light to pass through the external lens and a special phone lens. In addition to the loss of light, the result is also smoother images. On the other hand, the Xiaomi concept allows the light from the Leica lens directly into the sensor, apart from the sapphire glass to protect against dust and water.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept has the same faux leather back panel as the original, while it’s fully IP68 dustproof and water-resistant. The company has slightly beefed up the frame that the lens is attached to to make it more stable.
