Free WLANs are interesting because they are provided by public agencies. Users are not tracked and are not bombarded with ads. But what could be: Municipalities can include their own content on home pages, such as information for tourists.
Otherwise, the apps work in two modes: they either allow location sharing, and then they see your location on a map as well as the WLANs in the area. Or don't reveal your location and go to WiFi hotspots yourself.
The app's search, which is unfortunately only available in English, isn't particularly useful; It is best to zoom in on the map manually. You do not have to provide any data to use the hotspots. Connect to the WLAN network “WiFi4EU” and confirm use once in the browser.
If the WiFi hotspot is still too far away, you can navigate there using a handy button. Please note that Wi-Fi hotspots are more likely to be found outside of large cities or in peripheral areas. In most major cities free Wi-Fi is often available in public places anyway.
